I did warn you that this was going to be corny, didn't I?
I present for your amusement: Barbecued Corn on the Cob!

Thanks to Sarah L. and Melissa Z. for taking all the photos. They're so much better than they would be if I had done them myself.
So, I must confess, a lot of people didn't get it. Some people did, but I was also mistaken for a flower, a sunflower, a fairy, and a pineapple. I can see why. But ooh, costume ideas for next year, maybe?
I had thought that my hair messily pulled through a hole in the top of the hat would be a good clarifier, representing the silk at the top of a cob:

But I think the "wrapped in aluminum foil" part threw off a lot of folks.
I also wore it earlier in the day to ride my bike up to Greensgrow Farms to pick up our CSA share. That's where a friend took the first few photos above, in an environment where I fit right in - tee-hee! Overheard while I was flying by with my American flag flapping behind me: "Look mommy, it's a pineapple!" "No sweetie, I think she's corn." And then there was the guy who gave me a thumbs-up from his SUV, saying: "Hey, that's so corny!" And the mod hipsters shouting from their VW bug: "You're awesome!" And the woman who stopped her male companion to point and say: "Oh my god, that's hysterical." I noticed lots of cameras and cell phones snapping, especially as I made my way home through the touristy areas around the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. I made a point of waving to the people in the tourbusses, imaging I was a mascot or ambassador welcoming them to this city I love so much. Totally made my day! It's not about the attention, but about the affirmation: people get it; or even if they don't get it, they like it; and gosh darn it, I made them happy. For a brief moment, I made them smile, laugh, chuckle, guffaw. I wish I could do this every day!
It's too bad I don't have photos of myself on my bike, with the hat attached above my bike helmet (I'm a safety girl). Because it was pretty funny. I also wore this out dancing, just as I wore last week's costume out dancing, but this time, it was just an Argentine tango milonga. Argentine tango is all done in closed position (partners facing each other, arms always in contact), so there was very little risk of my partner getting stabbed in the eye by the top of my husks. Not so, with last week's funnel!
I won the Greensgrow Halloween Festival costume contest, but only by default. Because no one else entered. Booh. The prize was a big pumpkin, but since my bicycle was already loaded down by the big share pick-up, they gave me a $15 Greensgrow certificate instead. Yay for local, sustainably-raised foods!
And of course, this post wouldn't be complete without my signature superhero pose. "It's a flower! It's a pinapple! No, it's SUPER CORN!!!!!!"

That rocks! Totally awesome.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who can hardly ever RESIST silver, especially silver shoes (I have like 7 pairs at least, but as yet no silver boots...damn), I can appreciate its incorporation here. Fab!
Thanks, "Someone!" I can't resist silver, too. Not so much jewelry, but textiles. I recently ordered some silver heels, and was so bummed to find that they aren't going to work for me!
ReplyDeleteGreat costume!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy a good "corny" costume! That skirt is really pretty!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant - I love it. What a talent.
ReplyDeleteahahhaha! what an amazing costume! bravo!
ReplyDeleteStephanie, this is BRILLIANT! You also had me cracking up through your entire blog post, so know that the smiles and laughter extend well beyond physical proximity :-). Wish I could have seen it in person though! And oh, the possibilities for next year ...
ReplyDeleteAdorable costume, and holy smokes, the boots, leggings, and skirt are amazing! I hope you're not just saving them for Halloween.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your cheerful corn costume!! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd great description of your day!!
Also, it's awesome you were basically a 'walking commercial' for healthy food!! :)
I especially love the top part and the headgear and the 'wings' - and can totally see how you could be taken for a fairy!! :)
Not such a fan of aluminum foil myself, but the costume is truly great and smartly incorporated from the previous costume!!
Great volume and form of the skirt though - it's all just perfect!!
Thanks for all the bloggy-lovin', ladies (I'm pretty sure you're all ladies?). Jessica, I'm glad I made you smile. Layla, I hadn't thought of the walking commerical for healthy food concept, but I agree!
ReplyDeleteStephanie - thanks for the kind words on my comments. You have inspired me to offer to volunteer at the centre - making a difference is really why we are here.
ReplyDeleteSorry Stephanie -it's my othe remail address - it's Jane from The Small Fabric of My Life!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh!~ There are no words. That is hands down the most creative thing I have seen in a long long time!~
ReplyDeleteThis is the most awesome halloween costume I've ever seen! You rock!
ReplyDeleteWow, so basically, all my style-blogging heroines have stopped by with kind words about my corny costume. Oh, happy day! Thanks, everyone!
ReplyDeleteSo freakin cute!!! Love it :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you find the yellow fabric? Was it already printed or did you paint it?
Thanks, neighbourhood.gal. The yellow fabric is a leotard, which I painted, along with painting the hat.
ReplyDeleteThat's adorable, and clever, and shows a ton of costume building skill. You go, girl.
ReplyDeleteNice to have a visit from you again, sallymandy! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow could anyone see you as anything other than a corn cob in foil... that costume is AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteStephanie you look amazing...delicious even! And those boots are stunning! But the best for me part is the satisfaction you talk about and how happy you were on the day. And you deserve to win th econtest, by default or otherwise!
ReplyDeleteMervat xo
Ahaha that's ADORABLE!!
ReplyDeleteThat costume is awesome :).
ReplyDeleteWishing you love, luck, health, wealth and happiness in 2010.
